Lois Kapr was born in 1929 in the Dutch town of Haarlem as son of a Prague artist, who emigrated to the Netherlands in 1922. His father was a graphic artist and painter. Lois Kapr himself was taught in the art of painting by Hendrik Adriaan van der Wal (1882-1963).
Later, Lois Kapr was a pupil of Paul van der Ven (1892-1972) – landscapes and townscapes – and of the Realism artist Hendrikus IJkelenstam (1897-1993). By preference, Kapr painted pictures using a subdued winter palette.
