Jan Simon Knikker was born on 8 February 1911 in Leiden as the son of another Jan Simon Knikker (1889-1957). Jan Knikker jr. (as he signed himself) was a pupil at the Academy of Pictorial Arts in The Hague and painted townscapes and landscapes in a figurative style. A follower of the Hague school, his townscapes are much sought after abroad. He lived and worked successively in Wassenaar, Voorschoten and (from 1937) in The Hague, where he died on 16 July 1990.
