Frans Thomas Koppelaar was born on 23 April 1943 in The Hague. He was a pupil at the Royal Academy of Pictorial Art in The Hague. In 1982, he moved to Amsterdam, where he had a studio home on Bickers Island. He paints landscapes, townscapes and portraits, largely finding the subjects for his townscapes in the vicinity of his studio, on the Western Islands, in the Jordaan and the canal district. For his landscapes, he goes to the big rivers, coast and dunes or travels through France, Spain and Italy.
