The St. Nicolaaskerk (St. Nicholas Church) - built in eclectic style in 1885-1887 - and the Schreierstoren (Weeping Tower) lie close to each other on the Prins Hendrikkade, diagonally opposite to Central station. The Weeping Tower was originally a fortress at the head of the IJ, and gets its name from the women who waved their men goodbye from there as the ships sailed away. Today, it houses a nautical map and bookshop and cafe. The Prins Hendrikkade (Prince Hendrik Quay), a long street that had seven different names in the past, was given its present name in 1879 in honour of Prince Hendrik "the ocean navigator", youngest son of Willem II.
