Capital of the province of Friesland situated in the north of the Netherlands. The city is built on three knolls: Oldehove, Nijehove and Hoek. The construction of the tower for Oldehove, which had to be at least as high as that of the cathedral of Utrecht, was begun in 1529. However, because sound foundations were not provided, the tower began to subside even while building was still going on. The tower was restricted to a height of just 40 metres and is almost 2 metres out of perpendicular, becoming a focal point for Leeuwarden.
