Because of its support for William of Orange during the 80 Years' War, Oudewater was largely destroyed in 1575 by the Spaniards. Its best-known landmark is the Heksenwaag or Witches' Weighhouse, where in the 17th and 18th centuries women suspected of witchcraft were weighed and if considered light enough to fly a broomstick, generally burned at the stake.
